Wireless multicast can provide efficient data transmission. However, we find that wireless multicast might cause a significant increase in energy consumption of station. IEEE 802.11 WLAN cannot support multicast in power saving mode. NDN does not consider the wireless media characteristics and deliver data by broadcast, which increases energy consumption. In this paper, we propose an energy efficient multicast scheme (NDN-EEM) in wireless NDN. We use Pending Interest Table (PIT) to dynamic manage multicast group without additional multicast group management protocols. In order to improve transmission efficiency, we use PIT state information to distinguish the returned data into unicast and multicast. Then AP distributes the data by unicast and multicast mechanisms, respectively. In order to avoid a station receiving unnecessary broadcast/multicast frames, we redefined Traffic Indication Map (TIM) frame to notify multicast members which station has requested, which further reduces energy consumption. Simulation results show that the proposed NDN-EEM significantly reduces energy consumption.
