The decomposition of a wave field into plane waves can be regarded as a deconvolution problem. Several common strategies have been compared based on the presented framework; some typical advantages and pitfalls have been pointed out. It has been shown that part of the desired information cannot be reconstructed from the measurement. If additional knowledge or assumptions are used in the inversion process, more useful results can be obtained. The availability of such knowledge depends however on the desired application.
