This paper discusses recently implemented improvements of the QUABOX/CUBBOX core model, in order to meet the requirements for achieving higher accuracy in the prediction of assembly- and pin-power distributions in LWR cores. The accuracy of the coarse mesh neutron diffusion code QUABOX/CUBBOX was enhanced by incorporating the assembly discontinuity factors in its cross section libraries. Additionally the SPH method was successfully implemented for the prediction of pin-power distributions. It is shown that even for highly heterogeneous UOX fuel assemblies with fully inserted control rods, pin-power distributions can be predicted within a very good accuracy by applying a hybrid diffusion-transport equivalence algorithm based on the SPH method.
