NASA has goals of a continuing presence at the International Space Station, returning to the Moon and beyond, perhaps to Mars at some point in the future. Notwithstanding the significant debate on the timing, technical, and financial impacts of these goals, it is clear that continued spaceflight will require the typical elements including spacecraft, satellites, launch vehicles, to be successful. Each of these components shares a common link in that they are usually controlled by some sort of computer, linked together through a communications and networking system, and provide data off vehicle via RF technology. As we can see, Avionics, Networking, and Communications covers a broad gambit of areas. Many of the components may be combined to achieve Size Weight, and Power (SWaP) efficiencies - much like the evolution of business jet and commercial aircraft flight control and avionics systems. SWaP improvements, in conjunction with re-usable hardware and software components (sometime called Product Lines), can further be exploited to improve time to market and provide considerable cost savings. Parallels from commercial endeavors developing aircraft avionics, which is one of the closest analogs to Space Avionics, can be considered for future NASA Avionics Development. This paper asserts there is common ground between the two and that there are potentially time, cost, and quality advantages that may be realized by NASA if some of these concepts are adopted.
