Pilot scale experiments were performed to evaluate the effect of ozonation, granular activated carbon (GAC) and biologically activated carbon (BAC) in the removal of residual organic matter and precursors of disinfection hyprodudts from drinking water with once reactivated carbon. Biologically activated carbon removed organic matter most effectively, but ozonation alone was the most effective way to reduce the precursors of disinfection byproducts measured as AOX, mutagenicity and THMs.
