Condenser performance can significantly affect the heat rate and generation capacity of fossil and nuclear power plants. A one inch of mercury increase in back pressure could result in a 2% reduction in generation capacity. However, because of changing plant load, cooling water temperature, and flow rate, back pressure is not a true indication of condenser efficiency. Accurate condenser performance evaluation requires extensive instrumentation, data collection, and analysis. Results of the analysis are used to determine cleaning and chemical treatment schedule. The new analysis methods presented in this paper should lead to better tracking of the condenser performance. Accurate condenser performance monitoring can help a utility reduce operating and maintenance cost. In addition, accurate tracking of condenser performance can reduce reliance on chemical biocides usage resulting in less pollution.
