Two key lessons were learned from the review and analysis of the Moss Landing chimneys. First, be wary of the initial reaction to "fix-it-just-like-it-was" without reviewing the structural systems and analysis. In this case, replacement of the stayrods would have actually worked to the detriment of the chimneys. Second, make use of current analysis methods and tools. They can provide more detail and accuracy than was possible for designers of 25 years ago.
