The Selkirk Phase II Cogeneration Project 115 kV double circuit automated transmission line design is described in this paper. The 265 MW power plant, fueled by natural gas and No. 2 fuel oil backup, produces steam and electricity for use. The 3-mile-long line consists of double circuit tapered tubular galvanized steel structures with caisson foundations. The line design was completed using electronic plans and profiles provided by the surveyor and electronic templates for conductor sagging on Intergraph Micro-Station CADD. A commercial program was used to develop conductor sags and tensions. Load trees for design of the steel pole structures were generated using the tower loads option of the TLWORKSTATION program. Foundation design was completed with the use of a commercial program to develop loads and manual calculations for sizing reinforcing steel. Five miles of gravel access roads were constructed for erection of the line over rugged terrain in Bethlehem, New York. This line design was used to validate the commercial Computer Aided Line Design (CALD) program. Line design including alignment, structure spotting, cable sagging, blowout, stringing data, sag/tension data, and structure loading trees are automated in a personal computer environment. The program options were verified with computer solutions and hand calculations. The automated design of the Selkirk Phase II transmission line design and verification of the CALD computer program are described.
