A METHOD FOR PREDICTING THE OPERATING CONDITION AND PERFORMANCE OF POWER TRANSFORMER COOLERS

The transformer's operating temperature has a direct effect on its power transfer capability, insulation aging and losses. Utilities try to maintain their transformer coolers within acceptable working condition bounds in order to keep this operating temperature within manufacturers design limits. A study is being conducted in order to assess the influence of different ambient, meteorological and operating factors on the performance of transformer coolers. For this purpose two transformers on the Niagara Mohawk system have been instrumented with sensors that monitor oil and air temperatures, oil and air flow rates, ambient conditions and transformer loading under operating conditions. This paper presents preliminary results of the study of the effect of fouling on large power transformer temperatures. This is established by comparing measured top oil temperature vs. computed temperature over time. The study demonstrates that cooler fouling does have an effect on the top oil temperature.
