This paper explores the feasibility of controlling subsynchronous oscillations (SSO) by the modulation of scries compensation capacitance banks in transmission lines. Subsynchronous oscillations cause a tortional shaft torque on the generator. Damages resulting from uncontrolled subsynchronous oscillations have resulted in millions of dollars of loss due to breakdown in the shaft and costs for replacement power. Two transmission systems were selected for study. These were the benchmark systems that are recommended by the IEEE committee on subsynchronous resonance. The Electro Magnetic Transient Program (EMTP) was used to simulate these systems for studies. Different control strategies were developed to switch the series compensation capacitor banks in these test systems. These strategies were modeled as closed loop systems using Transient Analysis of Control System (TACS) in EMTP. A subsynchronous relay was used to detect the presence of subsynchronous currents in the transmission lines. The transfer function of this relay, describing its operation, was included in the EMTP's models of the systems. The relay provided an input for control in most of the devised strategies. Different strategies were studied on the test systems. The studies proved that effective control of SSO can be obtained by the detuning of the system and the removal or blocking of subsynchronous energy from the system.
