Electric power demand in Japan continues to increase steadily, while it becomes more difficult to install new power sources. The Japanese electric power industry plans to assure its future power supply by a variety of sources (nuclear, coal and LNG) and has established an Electric Industry Research and Development Plan, whose objective it is to ensure the required supply from the technical side. The plan includes not only technologies related to nuclear and coal or gas-fired thermal generation, but power transmission systems and environmental protection.
