The development a real-time traffic adaptive control scheme based on fuzzy logic for isolated and coordinated intersections is presented in this paper. The developed scheme is suited for control of congested transportation networks. The structure of the proposed controller relies on the fuzzy logic control principle. The inexact traffic data (number of vehicles present within a certain distance from the intersection) is fed to the inference engine of a fuzzy logic controller. The decision mechanism infers the appropriate intersection signal timing through a scheme involving a set of expert rules stored in the controller's knowledge database. The controller architecture is simple, modular, and expandable. The proposed scheme is applied in comparative simulation studies in controlling an isolated traffic intersection. It overall exhibited a better performance when measured against an optimally tuned actuated controller. Similarly, when applied to a network of coordinated intersections it outperformed the pretimed controller in terms of reducing the traffic congestion.
