The Los Angeles Metro Red Line is unique in that it is the first fully underground line in Southern California. We have been involved in a multitude of special studies aimed at satisfying difficult design objectives - which was to have a design that provides for maximum flexibility for operations while minimizing costs. An example of these studies include (but are not limited to) single tracking headways, fleet size requirements, placement of tail tracks, pocket tracks and crossovers, effect of mid line vent shafts, design headway versus operating headways (for peak and off-peak) etc. In order to schematically incorporate the results of these studies, graphically illustrate the capability of the line to meet the Systemwide Design Criteria (in so far as operational issues are concerned), physical characteristics and other operational features/ requirements of the Line, a Red Line Operations & Maintenance Requirements Plan (Volume 2) was developed. Volume 1 is the text version which describes the functionality of the system. This presentation will demonstrate the uniqueness of the document, how easy it is to read and yet comprehensive enough for project management and operations staff to extract information on which they can base future design decisions. The focus of this presentation will show how some key issues were discussed and decisions were made using the Operations & Maintenance Requirements Plan as a key tool. Examples of these issues are the requirement for optimum placement of crossovers in order to meet single tracking headway needs, peak operating headways based on projected ridership corridors for each branch line and the trunk section, crossover type and parameters taking into account passenger comfort (unbalanced lateral acceleration) etc.
