In contrast to mechanical alloying and related techniques for making complex or composite materials under high-energy mechanical stressing, there are several novel techniques where a milder mechanical treatment gives rise to those complexes under well-defined chemical interaction and morphology. Principles are mainly based on the charge transfer between dissimilar species under mechanical stressing, aided by the decrease in the coordination number. Verification of such mechanochemical reactions are obtained from various spectroscopic analyses. Examples are given mainly for complex oxides for electronic ceramics.
