An investigation on the kinetics of grinding quartz was carried out in a laboratory stirred ball mill through direct measurement of the selection functions and breakage functions. It was found that the grinding of top-size quartz below 450 μm follows a first order process; on the contrary, the breakage rate of the smaller size material is slowed down with increase in the percentage of larger size, and it is no longer first order. According to this finding, a selection function and a kinetics model were established to describe the grinding process of quartz in a stirred ball mill.
