The shape of the grinding medium in tumbling mills is the one of the important factors that affect grinding efficiency. By theoretical analysis and experiments the shape of the grinding medium is studied in this paper, the results have shown:Ball body is not the optimal shape of the grinding media. A new shape of grinding media, Cylinder- ball body, is developed. The experimental comparison between ball and cylinder-ball body shows: the grinding efficiency of the latter is higher than that the former. Consequently, it has been proved that seeking for the optimal shape of grinding media is a good way to improve the grinding efficiency of tumbling mills.
