The effects of composite stearate grinding aids on the comminution of blast-furnace slag(BFS) are studied in this paper. The mechanism of action of grinding aids is investigated by means of FT -IR, SEM and with the concept of erosion index. The results show that the grinding aids are adsorbed chemically on the surface of slag and make positive effects in comminution. The proposed mechanism of action of grinding aids involves two aspects: (a) the grinding aids reduce fracture strength of the surface zone of particles and improve attrition in grinding, and (b) the grinding aids reduce agglomeration of the fine particles in grinding.
