Up to now, the wide-spread pan-European Global system for Mobile Communications(GSM) offers limited services for data transmissin only. Due to increasing user ruirements and because of arising competing mobile reaio systems on e topic of GSM Phase 2+ development is to specify a general packet radio service that accommodates data connections with high bandwidth efficiency. In this paper, a proposeal is presented how to integrate packet oriented data transmission into the GSM system without major changes. In the first part encessary background information is given and the essential design issues are clarified. Then, emphasis is put on the performance evaluation and underlying simulation approach that originates in a formal specification embedded in a real-time simulation environment. Finally, simulation results are discussed.
