The paper gives an outline of a simple method to evaluate the self-controllability, i.e., passive shutdown or power stabilization of large LMFBRs in the case of accidents. Based on the transient distribution of core temperatures under typical ATWS conditions, effective reactivity changes due to sodium coolant and fuel temperature changes are correlated to unique linear functions for the limiting cases of sodium boiling as well as fuel failures. These limiting relations give the region where the self-controllability conditions are satisfied. Using this approach, a discussion is made on enhancement the self-controllability of the FBR.
