ABB customers have identified their future needs for advanced fuel designs. These needs include improved fuel reliability, improved fuel cycle economics, higher burnup capability and improved performance. ABB Combustion Engineering (ABB CE) has developed an Advanced Fuel Design, tailored to the Combustion Engineering, Inc. (CE) Nuclear Steam Supply System (NSSS) environment, which meets the current and anticipated needs of our customers well into the next century. To meet these needs the Advanced Fuel Design calleD turbo~TM features a full complement of innovative components, including: GUARDIAN~TM debris-resistant spacer grids, Turbo~TM Zircaloy mixing grids to increase thermal margin and grid-to-rod fretting resistance, value added fuel pellets to increase fuel loading, advanced cladding to increase burnup, axial blankets to improve neutron economy and an integral burnable absorber for improving fuel cycle economics. the unique features of the ABB CE's Turbo~TM Fuel Design provide these performance improvements to further enhance advantages improvmeents to further enhance the durability, robustness, and performance advantages of ABB CE's current fuel design (e.g. defect free performance, ease of handling, ability to reconstitute fuel rods from the top of the assembly with mixing vane grids, etc)
