A process using a transferred arc plasma to heat material charged into a spinning tub inside a sealed, water-cooled container has been applied to radioactive and hazardous waste treatment in several countire.s Inorganic material in the feed is melted into a leach-resistant slag, while organic material is vaporized and reacted to form carbon dioxide and water vapor. Any acid gases formed plus particulates are removed in a gas cleanup system. Design features and their relations to design objectives are described. Current and near-future applications are reported for treating nuclear power plant wastes and for remediating contamination from past nuclear weapons activities.
