Perspective on critical heat flux research for reactor design and safety

This paper presents an overview of current issues, recent achievements, and future needs for critical heat flux (CHF) research with respect to reactor design and safety. The focus is given to water-cooled reactor applications but the fusion application is also covered. Major advances during the last 15 years are the improvement of prediction methods for both simple and complex geometries, and the new experimental works for new application areas. Future research directions are suggested as four areas: identification of physical mechanisms, extension of CHF data bases, improvement of prediction methods, and investigation of CHF enhancement techniques.
