Hold up and elutriation rate of fine particles in a powder-particle spouted bed

The hold up of aluminium hydroxide fine particles (Group C powders in Geldart's classification) in a spouted bed of coarse silica sand (Group D powders in Geldart's classification) and elutriation of the fine particles from the bed were investigated with a transparent cone-bottomed column of 10.0 cm in inside diameter, 100 cm high. In the experiment, fine particles were continuously fed to the spouted bed. The elutriation rate constant of fine particles and the hold up of fines in the bed were measured at steady state. The effects of superficial gas velocity, the feed rate of fines and the diameter of fine particles on the hold up of fines in the bed and the elutriation rate constant of fines from the bed were investigated. The results showed that the hold up of fines in the bed increased steeply whereas the elutriation rate constant declined sharply at a certain powder size less than 1 mum i naverage diameter, this may be attribted to the stronger cohesion force between particles.
