This paper reports that flame retardant dibromostyrene-based acrylic latexes have been prepared via an emulsion polymerization technique and evaluated in a variety of textile applications where fabric flammability may be a concern. Latexes are characterized in terms of glass transition temperature, residual monomer content, solids content, pH, Brookfield viscosity, specific gravity, particle size, and flame retardancy. They can be applied to a wide range of fabric substrates to give adequate physical and flame retardant properties. Dibromostyrene latex coated 100% polyester fabrics pass both NFPA-701 and MVSS-302 tests. Dibromostyrene latex coated nylon upholstery fabric meets California Bulletin 133 criteria when used over flame retardant flexible polyurethane foam. It is felt that the aromatic bromine in the dibromostyrene latex is too thermally stable in some applications to provide effective flame retardancy without a less stable co-flame retardant or synergist. Therefore, a small quantity of halogenated phosphate ester type flame retardant or hexabromocyclododecane is added to some coatings to enhance performance in small scale flammability tests.
