The effects of various protective additives on cell-bubble interactions were quantitatively investigated in this paper. The results showed that the number of cells adsorbed per unit bubble surface area (GAMMA) were reduced when additives were supplemented in the medium except that of polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP). The reduction of GAMMA was considered to be caused by the changes of surface tension and viscosity of medium. Further studies on cell death rate showed that all of these additives have protective effects on cells in bubble column. Therefore, we concluded that the protective mechanism of these additives, except that of PVP; is a result to suppress the cell adsorption on bubble surface, based on their physical nature. But PVP protects the cells from damage through other mechanism.
