Tohid Tunnel project includes a set of twin tunnels to accommodate six lanes of traffic along the Chamran-Navab Highway in Central Tehran. The tunnel is 2.1 km long and is built under active highways, street traffic, and a subway station. Each tunnel is 12.5 m wide and 8.5 m high, separated by a series of concrete columns 1.5 m in diameter and 4 meters apart supporting the tunnel crown as well as the soil above at a maximum depth of about 23 m. The tunnels were constructed using sequential excavation method and lined with cast in place reinforced concrete using precast concrete segments as permanent forms and facade. The design-build contract was over $400M and included the geotech investigation, structural and tunnel design, construction, and fit outs including the paving of the road, lighting, ventilation, and traffic monitoring and control systems. The project started in 2006 and was inaugurated in February 2010. This paper discusses the ground conditions, design issues, many challenges that was addressed during the construction, and finally some of innovative approaches to the design and construction of the tunnel.
