Network providers are facing pressures associated with large-scale ATM switch deployment and its impact on network architectures and investment priorities. Methods and findings of target architecture and transition planning research for ATM deployment in Bell Canada are described. Insights gained through this work span a broad range of issues and provide a compelling rationale for a phased switch deployment to form a distributed concentrator architecture, and for coordinated planning of ATM and transmission system architectures.
