This paper reviews the Czech mining industry since the early 1990s, when the sector's systematic restructuring was launched. Attention is paid to coal mining, uranium and ore mining, to the extraction of building materials and other raw materials that have been mined in the territory of the Czech Republic. The section devoted to university mining education offers an outline of its historical development, describing the current forms of education at the Faculty of Mining and Geology of the Mining Technical University in Ostrava. The analysis implies that at the beginning of the next millennium the Czech mining industry seems to be facing good prospects. This, however, calls for continued education of more mining engineers.
