摘要

A new type of steel with ultra fine grain surface layers (SUF steel) possesses an excellent crack arrest property for preventing brittle crack propagation. It is expected that application of such steel with high crack arrestability to ship hull structures will effectively prevent catastrophic damage to a ship hull, which damage might cause ocean pollution and casualties, as well as serious accidents such as collisions and/or groundings of very large crude oil carriers, LNG carriers, LPG carrers, etc.
