This paper evaluates the performance efficiency of two fixed bed granular activated carbon (GAC) adsorbers for the removal of trichloroethylene (TCE) from drinkign waters. A novel fixed bed system called the reverse stratified tapered adsorber (RSTA) is compared experimentally and using model simulations to the conventional normally stratified cylindrical adsorber (SCA).Laboratory models of RSTA and SCA were operated at identicla TCE influent concentration,mean flow velocities,flwo rates and carbon loading conditiosn.Both RSTA and SCA were oeprated in the down-flow mode.The RSTA consisted of a tapered glass column with diameter increasing in the flow direction and five different GAC particle sizes (772 #um#m - 1539 #um#m) arranged such that the particle diameter decreased in the flow direction.The SCA consisted of a cylindrical glass column with particle size increasing in the flow direction.
