Visual inspection is the definitive method to detect early indicators of pump impeler low flow cavitation damage. However, there are obstacles to performing visual inspections on large pumps. Pulling the pump to inspect the impeller is expensive. Accessing the impeller while the pump is still installed was historically not possible. The Pipe Walket~(TM)/LIP robotic inspection system was developed to address both these issues. This inspection ssytem was used at two nuclear plants in the Fal of 1997 to visualy inspect both the high and low pressure sides of the reactor coolant pump impellers in-situ.
