Hydrogen transport and storage technologies using metal hydrides

Metal hydrides are effective materials with the extent of applications such as the storage, heat pump, and secondary batteries in relation to hydrogen as a clean energy medium. That is metal hdrides can be utilized effectively for the hydrogen storage. On the other hand, when the metal hydride absorb or desorb the hydrogen, a large heat output of reaction occurs. So, the metal hydride can also be applied to a heat pump. We have researched on a hydrogen storage tank using the metal hydrides for a PEM fuel cel system, and furthermore a high efficiency heat purmp technology using their metal hydrides. First, we report here the completed hydrogen storage tank. Secondly, a double effect type metal hydride heat pump configuration is described in which a waste heatg is recovered in a factory cite and transported to areas far distant from the industrial district. This latter study is proceeded at present as one of the programs in New Sunshine Project, which aims for development of ingenious energy utilization technology to achieve reduction of primary energy consumption with keeping cultural and wealthy life and preventing deterioration of global environment.
