In 1995, Natural Resources canada, sponsored the Hydrogenics Corporation and the Hydrogen research Institute to develop a novel stationary poer source for the Arctic. This is aimed at powering communications equipment and other "low-power, high-energy" applications. The cold, the snow and the long nocutural months derte conventional power sources such as rechargeable batteries or solar panels. Arctic weather also casues frequent maintenance, which is expensive in remote locations, may cause unacceptable down time to mission-critical equipment.
