Hydrogen has been regarded as a future secondary fuel for internal combustion engines mainly because of CO_2-and HC-free combustion. Hydrogen fuel features a very wide range of flammability limits and an extremely high burning velocity. These wide ranging flammability limits and the high burning velocity may well contribute to a stable combustion even in a lean mixture and to the relatively high thermal efficiency with a shorter combustion period in hydrogen engines. There have already been numerous studies about combustion characteristics and engine performance at various design and operation conditions. Hoowever, the peculiarly abnormal combustion such as backfire, preignition and knowkcing of hydrogen mixture still prevents a reliable operation and effective strategies for solving such a serious problem should be prepared.
