Road transport scenarios and their impact on acidification and ozone formation

The role of road transport emissions in air pollution phenomena is considered to be very important, not only as far as photochemical smog is concerned, but alsofor acidification. This has been demonstrated by the results obtained with two regional scale models. The emission secenarios used for this impact study have been based on the possible abatement strategies currently under discussion in Europe and include also recent European legislative actions (EU directives, Auto Oil Programme). The emission factors used in the scenarios are partially derived from on-the-road traffic emission measurements carried out for gasoline passenger cars with a closed-loop controlled three-way-catalyst (TWC) and for a carburetted non-catalyst car. The results of the scenario computations show that the expected NO_x emission reductions related to the vehicle concept will have a larger impact on acidification than the expected SO_2 emission reductions associated with fuel composition. The impact of the expected NO_x and HC road transport emission reductions on ozone formation is rather limited.
