Diesel engines are susceptible to performance degradation through the fuel source. A fuel/water separator can prevent this damage by removing emulsified water from the fuel. This paper demonstrates how a flat sheet fuel/water separation efficiency tester is used as a predictor to compare fuel/water separator efficiencies. The purpose of the tester is to test the water removal efficiency of a fuel/water separator at the media level. A test stand modeled on the SAE J1488 test method, but utilizing flat sheets effectively serves to decipher differences in media substrates. A hypothesis has been proposed that the pore size of the media makes little difference in water removal efficiency and that the treatment of the substrate makes the most difference in water removal efficiency. This theory will attempt to be repeated at the media level with the flat sheet tester in reference to treatment properties by comparing a treated substrate to an untreated substrate. This flat sheet tester has the ability to predict differences in sheet performance efficiency and is now being utilized in media design. There are complexities unique to a flat sheet tester including design, hydrostatic head comparison, and Karl-Fisher titrations. All will be explored in this paper.
