Service life of rails is mainly determined by wear and surface damages. The properties of rail steels differing in chemistry were characterized with the focus on the differences between bainite and pearlite microstructures. The high strength bainite steel shows higher fatigue strength under completely reversed tension and compression and resistance to flaking in contact fatigue test than the fine pearlite steel. The wear resistance is almost the same for both.
