Temporal Variability at the CARIACO Continental Margins Time Series, With Focus on Spatial Variability as Observed by Satellites

Since November 1995, we have conducted monthly cruises to 10.5N/64.66W, catpuring several upwelling cycles at the CARIACO (CArbon Retention In A Colored Ocean) time series station. During this period, we have also collected infrared satellite imagery (AVHRR) at a rate of 1-3 images per day, and have examined scatterometer (ERS 1/2) data collected at weekly intervals, to help assess spatial variability around the time series station. The field and satellite data show that upwelling starts in November is fully developed by February-March of the following year. The AVHRR satellite data shows not only a seasonal change in temperature values, but in the spatial extent of the cold water plume. At PORSEC'98, We will also show SeaWiFS data collected over CARIACO, and describe the SIMBIOS program of ocean color validation based on the CARIACO time series.
