摘要

Risk and reliability methods in engineering pratice have matured over the last three decades. The ultimate measure of maturity can be judged by its implementation in serving societal needs. The nuclear industry has utilized such methods since the early seventies with limited success. Design codes are being modified in most engineering disciplines, reflecting advances in this area. However, implementation of the methods can, at best, be described as non-uniform. The purpose of the panel discussion is to bring together experts from around the world to discuss the status of implementation. Success stories need to be shared, but also problems with implementation and practices. The panel discussion should provide guidance to engineering practitioners and policy makers of improved approaches to implementing risk and reliability methods. This in turn will help to meet increasing societal needs for rational decision-making to achieve improved safety and cost-effectiveness of structures and engineered facilities over their life cycle.
