Averaging techniques are well suited for infrared image processing because they consider spatially averaged temperature fields related or not to each constitutive phase of heterogrneous media. In the case of a simple geometry, such as rectangular adjacent plates, one or two dimensional convenient analytical slutions are obtained with integral transforms versus time and space (Laplace and Fourier). These solutions can give relationships between averaging temperature related to each plate. These expressions are suitable in order to estimate thermophysical properties such as thermal diffusivity, thermal resistance at the junction of the plates or macroscopic exchange coefficient. The main advantage of such methods is to process a great number of data in order to reduce the influence of the measurement noise. Experimental results are obtained in a steady state case. A direct estimation method and an analytical study about the estimation error are presented. Such a method can be used in order to characterize stratified composite media or contact resistances between plates with a very simple experimental device.
