The significant conversion to plastic bottles in the carbonated soft drink industry started with the switch to PET in 1977. Since then the growth in this product was nothing short of phenomenal, reaching several billion of units in this and other packaging areas. Many factors combined to make this growth possible: material availability, machinery availability, and above all market acceptance. However, market acceptance required a new product definition throughout the supply chain as well as changing consumer expectations. The expansion of PET is continuing in the soft drink industry around the world as well as expanding to other packaging areas, encroaching what was historically glass and metal cans domains.
