Making the transition to one-piece flow is an improtant ingredient in the overall strategy of total waste elimination. The SDI/Mesa plant was originally organized and laid out in functional cells to support a lot-based production system Making the transition to one-piece flow represented a radical departure from our traditional manufacturing approach because the waste inherent in a lot-based production system had become accepted as a natural part of everyday work.
