Supply chain management consists of several highly interrelated processes from design and planning of the chain to the daily coordination of activities across an enterprise. Design and planning decisions spread over the traditional spectrum of strategic, tactical, and operational levels. At the strategic level, the selection of an overall business philosophy as well as selecting a target market, deciding on business processes and information system infrastructure have to be made. Once a framework of such strategic decisions is given, the aggregate decisions on the number of business partners. location and number of physical facilities, desired production and transportation methods, the means and the procedures of planning the system can be made at the tactical level. Subsequently those decisions provide a form for molding shorter term production and transportation plans. The problems at the tactical and strategic levels are complicated by the ever increasing requirements on the performance of execution level decisions. Execution should be quick, accurate, and through in meeting customer needs. As a chain includes many components, oftentimes represented by different companies, there are many challenges in synchronizing the efforts to ship the right product at the right time. Advances in computers, communications, and application software have made it possible to treat many of these problems efficiently. This paper attempts to provide a discussion of the many dimensions of the supply chain management problems with references to some of the existing solution methodologies.
