The US/Mexico border represents the center of international manufacturing with different challenges and opportunities. Among these challenges, a continuous operational improvement is required in the "maquiladora" industry to support the supply-chain integration strategy. The objective of the paper is to present the current JIT issues facing the "maquiladora" industry for continuous perational improveemnt. These issues seek to simplify the manufacturing process to reduce or eliminate the need for complex systems. Many "maquiladoras" have achieved sizable gains in productivity, space utilization, on-time delivery and quality. One-piece flow production, kanban, setup time reduction and waste elimination represent the major areas of improvement in the "maquiladora". A brief overview of these JIT issues is presented.
