Traditional work planning techniques do not take dynamic workloads sufficiently into account when determining labor and facility requirements for the processing of work. Consequently, variation or under utilization of resources (work areas, labor hours, etc.) and, the subsequent poor on-time delivery performance of organizations. A new theoretical approach, based on the utilization and productivity of resources, is used to demonstrate the use of an Area-to-Volume (AVR) metric in the analysis of work and its on-time completion. in this paper, the AVR metric is used to determine an optimum avlue of AVR (AVR sub opt) resulting in the 100 percent on-time delivery of work. An industrial case study is presented that illustrates the approach.
