Mine waste mounds frequently are little accessible, irregularly shaped bodies of appreciable size that are physically difficult to manage. Digital terrain models (DTMs) are useful management tools. especially when integrated as a data layer in Geographic Information Systems (GIS). Frequently, DTMs of waste mounds are derived from stereograaphic analysis of aerial photographs. In our contribution, we discuss increasingly applied softcopy or digital photogrammetry versus analytical measurement as a method to generate DTMs. Issues of DTM accuracy are considered . Results from ongoing studies in the German coal and potash mining industries are presented. As an example, it is shown how we used DTMs to calculate short wave solar radiation and potential evaporation from a potash mine residue mound.
