Field comparison of paired direct push and HSA wells

This study was conducted to determine if prepacked screen direct push (DP) permanent monitoring wells provide representative water quality samples. A total of eight sets of paired DP and hollow stem auger (HSA) monitoring wells were installed in a silty to sandy alluvial aquifer. The paired wells were sampled for several chlorinated volatile organic compounds (X-VOC) over nine months. Linear regression showed that removal of a single erratic data pair yields a correlation coefficient (r~2) of 0.914 for the X-VOCs. Field parameters (pH, specific conductance, water levels) for the paired wells show strong correlation. Z-test of the X-VOC data from the paired wells indicates no statistically significant diffeence between the HSA and DP data. The non-parametric Wilcoxon Signed Pank test indicates no statistically significant difference between the DP and HSA wells for ten of the tewlve analyte-well pair combinations tested. For the parameters investigated, the results of the statistical analyses indicate that the DP wells provide representative water quality samples. These results, the low cost, and case of installation make the DP wells an attractive alternative for many groundwater monitoring investigations.
