Ethers are rapidly becoming problematic environmental contaminants. Alkyl ether oxygenates (AEOs) such as methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE) are used extensively in gasoline. Widespread use of these chemicals has led to their introduction into terrestrial sinks. Cyclic ethers such as 1,4-dioxane are used as industrial solvents, and also occur frequently in groundwater. Although MTBE and 1,4-dioxane are often considered recalcitrant, their biodegradation has been reported under certain conditions. The objective of this research was to determine if these chemicals biodegrade under ambient conditions in soil microcosms.
