Natural attenuation study of the aquifer underlying the trecate 24 oilfield

For about three years, evolution of the petroleum-contaminated groundwater in the area of Trecate in northern Italy has been monitored. The analyses and the physic-chemical measurements performed during this period have evidenced a correlation between dissolved or floating hydrocarbon compounds in the groundwater and the concentrations of certain electron acceptors. Changes in the Redox potential and in the concentration of dissolved oxygen are related to the concentration of hydrocarbons. Natural bioattenuation is quantified for each type of oxidizing compound or element studied. The results indicate that the quantities of hydrocarbons removed by degradation, in terms of benzene equivalents per day, are remarkably stable, with values comprised between 1.00 and 1.26 grams per cubic meter of groundwater per day. This article reports results obtained during the three first years of a study which is still in progress.
