Biodegradation of 2,4-dichlorophenoxy acetic acid under field conditions in wheat crop

Experiment was conducted to study the degradation of 2,4-dichlorophenoxy acetic acid (2,4-D) by Azotobacter chroococcum strain 33 and its effects on wheat (cv. WH-283, sensitive to 2,4-D) growth and yield. Wheat seeds wre inoculated with culture of A.chroococcum Strain 33. Crop was sprayed with two concentrations of 2,4-D (ester) viz., d_1 circlea 570 and d_2 circlea of 1140 g a.i. per hectare at 35 days after sowing (DAS).Degradation of 2,4-D and microbial count were followed in the soil collected from the rhizosphere on different days (0,7,14,21,28) after spraying. It was found that 2,4-D degraded at a faster rate in case of inoculation in comparison to that in which inoculation was not carried out. Application ofnitrogen circlea of 90 kg ha~(-1) also enhanced the degradation rate of 2,4-D. Microbial count in soil samples increased with inoculation. Spraying of 2,4-D and application of nitrogen increased soil microbial count. The degradation rate of 2,4-D was found to be at a faster rate under higher dose of it and where inoculation was carried out along with nitrogen application. Seed inoculation with A. chroococcum strain 33, with or without nitrogen applicationincreased growth and yield of wheat. It was also recorded that seed inoculation lessened the adverse effect of both the concentrations of 2,4-D on wheat growth and yield in comparison to non-inoculation.
